The Different Faces Of The Zanzibar Collection
The Zanzibar Collection is a portfolio of four, subtly-nuanced resorts, each of which has been designed to suit the needs of specific guest profile. As a close-knit family, we’ve developed the collection over a 25-year love affair with Zanzibar; and we believe them to be uncompromisingly unrivalled in terms of warmth of service, perfection of cuisine, intimacy of surroundings and breadth of Zanzibari experiences. Thanks to our commitment to the island, our hotels have come to represent the benchmark for excellence while our green credentials, in terms of sustainable tourism, local community interaction and environmental respect are second to none.
A Very Personal Sense Of Social Responsibility
As a family, we believe in only employing local people wherever possible. Plus, we invest heavily in their skills training and family welfare. Most of our managers have worked their way up to their current position and we’ve supported them by means of a rigorous programme of training. We’re proud that they have a career for life in the tourism industry. It is our policy to devote substantial support to our local community in terms of health, sanitation and educational infrastructure. Similarly, we buy all of our fresh produce from the local farmers and fishermen wherever possible. We support local craftsmen and artisans in our interior design and refurbishment as well as marketing our own range of Palacina Interior Design throughout East Africa (include link to new website). Our insistence on the use of solar power, rigorous energy-saving, minimal plastics use, organic gardening, general waste and water recycling and meticulous marine environmental protection have also ensured that our green credentials are exemplary. As the first commercial group on the southeast coast, we were also the first to install electricity and this has contributed immeasurably to its development with regard to transport, employment, income and overall infrastructure.
We have installed a state-of-the-art sewage-treatment plant that transforms our wastewater into irrigation water. We plant only indigenous species, all of which are
selected for their ability to absorb humidity during the day and release it into the roots at night. In this way we have achieved a 50% cut in water consumption. Our hotels also adhere to a stringent policy of laundry/bathroom water-use minimization.
Zero Plastic – Total Commitment
We’re committed to the eradication of single-use-plastic and use recyclable paper products wherever feasible. We also prefer to use glass bottles rather than plastic and provide water for re-usable containers in all our rooms. Additionally, any plastic containers still in use are immediately recycled into plant pots or construction materials.
Interior Design For The Planet
The characteristic design and furnishings that so distinguish The Zanzibar Collection are hand-crafted by local artisans. Not only does this ensure that we celebrate and preserve the Zanzibari heritage but also that we provide a valuable income-earning opportunity for the local community. Our distinctive ‘look’ also capitalizes on the use of upcycled locally sourced/reclaimed materials.
Caring About Purchasing
If we can - we purchase locally and so support an extensive group of local farmers, fishermen and artisans. Where we can, we buy seasonally and organically. All our menus are planned with a view to the reduction of airmiles; and according to rigorous nutritional standards. Our menus reflect the authentic heritage of the region while our methods preserve local skills and customs.
Green Leisure Activities
Our extensive range of leisure options adheres to the tenets of social responsibility and environmental protection. By supporting local communities, we promote their development. We are also dedicated to the preservation of Zanzibar’s vibrant cultural heritage by means of our classes in cookery, palm-weaving, Swahili and Bao. Finally, our guest library is an invaluable source of information on the flora, fauna and history of the archipelago.
Our staff includes a dedicated marine biologist who watches over the well-being of our delicate tidal ecosystem while offering educational workshops for the staff. We also promote reef safaris, environmentally caring dive programmes and water sports.
Family matters to us. So we’re committed to ensuring a family-friendly environment; and to offering a colorful selection of ‘edutainment’. We offer leisure options to include: guided reef walks, children’s water sports, beach volleyball, sandcastle-building, Swahili lessons, cookery workshops, palm-weaving and palm-tree climbing for kids plus tours of the Jozani Forest, Stone Town and the Spice Plantations. Finally, families may like to go for a bike ride, learn to kite surf, kayak, windsurf and dive. We can also arrange family oriented visits to the local village and school.
Guests will be reassured to know that our distinctive Frangipani Spas are inspired by local plants and products. Our delicately fragranced scrubs and body reatments are hand-made and use locally produced coconuts, fruit and spices. All our treatments are free of harmful chemicals and marine-toxic plastics.
Our Commitment To a Green Future
We’ve built our business on the foundation of conscious commitment to social, economic and environmental responsibility. We’re dedicated to the idea that the provision of ‘luxury with a conscience’ promotes the longevity of our planet as well as the well-being of people. We also remain fully invested in the adoption of only environmentally- and community-supportive polices and implementations for the future.
