Dedication to Social Responsibility

We take pride in sharing that a significant portion of our managers have advanced from within our ranks, supported
every step of the way by an extensive training program that secures them a lifelong career in the tourism sector.

Whenever possible, our commitment lies in employing local individuals, and we equally invest substantially in enhancing
their skill sets. Additionally, we actively contribute to our local community by improving health, sanitation,
and educational facilities. Our dedication extends to sourcing fresh produce from nearby farmers and fishermen.
Moreover, our commitment to promoting local artisans and craftsmen is evident in our interior design and
refurbishment efforts. It might interest our guests to know that we create and market our own range of Palacina
Interior Design products, many of which are crafted in Zanzibar.

Our dedication to utilizing solar power, practicing rigorous energy conservation, minimizing plastic usage, engaging in
organic gardening, recycling waste and water, and meticulously safeguarding the marine environment has
solidified our exceptional "green credentials." As pioneers in introducing electricity to this region, we
have also played a pivotal role in its overall development, impacting transportation, employment, income,
and the overall infrastructure.

Sustainable Sanitation

Our dedication to environmentally friendly practices is a source of pride for us. This commitment is clearly demonstrated through our investment in a sewage treatment facility that converts wastewater into a valuable irrigation system. Our landscaping strategy revolves around the exclusive use of indigenous plant species, carefully selected for their capacity to absorb moisture during the day and gradually release it into their roots at night. This innovative approach has yielded a remarkable 50% reduction in our water consumption. Furthermore, our devotion extends to a comprehensive policy aimed at minimizing water usage in both our laundry and bathroom facilities.

Zero Plastic Use - The Way Forward

Our unwavering dedication lies in completely eliminating plastic from our operations. We give preference to recyclable cardboard and paper materials whenever they can be used. This principle is also reflected in our preference for glass bottles over plastic, particularly when providing drinking water for refillable containers across all our accommodations. Furthermore, any remaining single-use plastic containers are promptly repurposed through recycling, being transformed into items like plant pots or construction materials.

Going Green on Interior Design

The unique collection of artifacts and furnishings that adorn The Zanzibar Collection is intricately crafted by local artisans, reaffirming our commitment to safeguarding and valuing the island's treasured heritage. This also serves as a way to provide livelihood opportunities for the local community. Additionally, we take pride in fostering our distinct design philosophy by incorporating upcycled materials sourced from local origins or repurposed from reclaimed sources.

Buying Local, Reducing Airmiles

We greatly prioritize sourcing locally whenever the chance presents itself. Our business interactions span a broad spectrum, involving collaborations with local farmers, fishermen, and skilled artisans. We hold a preference for choosing seasonal and organic items, and we modify our menus accordingly. Our purposeful endeavors involve infusing authentic regional heritage into our offerings, enabling us to respect local traditions and expertise while delivering an authentic and genuine experience.

Green Leisure

We have taken great care to ensure that our recreational offerings align with the principles of social responsibility and ecological conservation. Our support for local villages not only contributes to their development but also aligns with our commitment to various community-driven environmental initiatives. Furthermore, we actively contribute to the preservation of Zanzibar's cultural heritage through experiences such as cooking classes, palm-weaving workshops, Swahili language lessons, and sessions to learn the Bao game.

Marine Conservation Matters

The role of our marine biologist is pivotal in ensuring the health of the protective barrier reef that encompasses our shoreline, as well as the intricate tidal ecosystem it supports. We provide extensive educational workshops on marine conservation for our entire staff. In terms of our guests, we encourage them to engage in environmentally conscious activities such as reef walks, diving, and snorkeling. Each of these pursuits is carried out with an unwavering dedication to upholding environmental integrity and promoting sustainability.

Family Well-Being

We offer a warm welcome to families and, as a tightly-knit family ourselves, we are dedicated to cultivating a family-friendly atmosphere that is enriched with a diverse array of engaging and educational activities. Our amenities include features like baby cots and chairs, additional beds for children, designated meal times for kids, and an extensive variety of recreational options. These choices encompass guided reef walks, water activities tailored for children, beach volleyball, sandcastle-building, Swahili lessons, cooking workshops, palm-weaving, and supervised palm-tree climbing. Furthermore, families have the opportunity to partake in excursions to the Jozani Forest, Stone Town, and the Spice Plantations. For families seeking more adventurous endeavors, we can facilitate activities such as bike rides, kite surfing lessons, kayaking, windsurfing, and diving. We are truly excited to coordinate family-oriented visits to the local village and school, offering meaningful interactions and insights into the community.

Spa-Sensitive

The variety of treatments offered at our Frangipani Spas is deeply influenced by indigenous medicinal plants and locally sourced resources. Our collection of body treatments and beauty rituals incorporates handcrafted products derived from locally grown coconuts, fruits, spices, and fragrances. Prioritizing our guests' wellness, all our treatments are thoughtfully curated to eliminate harmful chemicals and detrimental plastics.

Investing in The Future

We believe in the precept that the provision of ‘luxury with a conscience’ promotes the longevity of our planet and the well-being of people alike. Our own business has been built on a foundation of conscious commitment to social, economic and environmental responsibility. Meanwhile, we will always be dedicated to the adoption of only environmentally and community-supportive polices and implementations in the future.

Solar Projects

In less than twenty-five years since The Zanzibar Collection took the significant step of introducing primary grid electricity to the South East Coast of the Island, we are excited to unveil another remarkable achievement! While recognizing The House Of Wonders as the first electrified building in Zanzibar's history, we are now thrilled to declare The Zanzibar Collection as the pioneer in adopting renewable energy on the island.

Representing a milestone for Zanzibar, our 1 MW project spans over 20,000 square meters and incorporates 2640 solar panels, generating energy equivalent to powering around 700 homes. This cutting-edge initiative is now operational, supplying electricity to three out of our four Zanzibar Collection resorts, in alignment with our unwavering commitment to environmental conservation. This significant accomplishment comes after three years of dedicated construction, investment, and development efforts.

We have dedicated resources to establish the required infrastructure and equipment to seamlessly integrate the generated solar power into the main grid. Additionally, this system is supplemented by our collaboration with ZECO and our own generators during nighttime hours.

This endeavor fills us with immense pride and strengthens our dedication to environmental sustainability. As a result, the carbon footprint resulting from our operations and the stays of our esteemed guests at Zanzibar Collection properties will notably decrease.
